16 Thanksgiving Conversation Starters {free printable}

I remember our first Thanksgiving overseas. We celebrated alone, had pumpkin vine soup, tofu, and something called “qingcai.” In America we call them weeds! It was memorable :) And made me feel our need for thanksgiving conversation starters. We didn’t always know how to welcome our friends and feel at home.

Celebrating holidays overseas is tricky. Sometimes we celebrate alone, sometimes we have people into our home, and sometimes we go to another foreign family’s home. It all depends on where we happen to be living!

But one thing I’ve taken away from living overseas is the need to be intentional about times together. Community and fellowship is sweet and a precious gift!

One of the things I’ve become more intentional about when having people in my home is conversation. It sounds basic, but in our high-tech, transient world, having rich, meaningful conversations that edify is not a guarantee. I created these cards to ensure folks leave my home feeling nourished in both body and spirit. Feel free to use these Thanksgiving conversation starters to make Thanksgiving dinner unforgettable for your guests.

One way I’ve become more intentional when people are in my home is conversation, especially around the table.

The family table is a natural setting for rich, meaningful connections so I want to be deliberate about using it! Simply incorporating a scripture table runner  is an easy way to initiate conversation and get people talking about what they are thankful for.

How to use our Thanksgiving Conversation Starters:

The most simple way is to leave one card on each dinner plate. Image how beautiful your table will be with these cards nested inside each napkin or standing next to the water goblet!

Do you use name cards? You could set each Thanksgiving conversation starter next to the name card so each person will be sure to see it.

You could have a beautiful bowl in the center of the table and allow your guests to draw one as they feel comfortable.

Can you think of other creative ways to use these Thanksgiving conversation starters?

I’d love to hear!

  1. Pumpkin vine in coconut cream is a soupy dish they serve in Papua New Guinea too when I was over there on a mission trip, not something I’ve tried to cook back here in Australia, might just stick to the pumpkin itself.
