Who does the Bible say I am? My Identity in Christ

In my role as a pastor’s wife, I counsel many women who say things like, “I don’t know why God hates me.”

I frequently talk with people who are afraid that God is just looking to punish them and they’re afraid that if they make one wrong move, God is going to zap them.

And some people are motivated by the opposite: “If I do all the right things then God is some sort of a genie in a bottle and he is just going to bless me with health, wealth, and prosperity.”

When talking with these women, the first thing I do is ask if they have a saving relationship with Christ. The answer is normally, “Well, yeah, but…”

These same women who know they are at peace with God can’t see that the ultimate proof of his love was the death of his Son.

I’ve come to understand these women need a firm grounding in who they are in Christ. Perhaps you do too. If you are looking to understand who I am in Christ, you are in the right place!

Back to the Beginning

I was raised in a fairly strict home. My grandma was pretty legalistic. My dad was a recovering Catholic. It wasn’t until about ten years ago when I went to an Elise Fitzpatrick conference for women called, “Because He Loves Me,” that I experienced a new dawning. This conference was like a mini who I am in Christ bible study! It showed me who I am in God and that changed everything.

I remember feeling this awakening in me. One of the Awana verses that was drilled into our heads was, “If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me.” We had one teacher who was adamant about “If you are harboring unconfessed sin in your life, God cannot hear your prayers.”

Here I was, this little girl at 8, 9, 10, 11, even 12 years old, and I would lie in bed at night and literally shudder in fear. I was a child who, if my parents said do or do not do, I obeyed. My mom would tell you that I just never strayed. I didn’t go through a rebellious time, my sister did it all for me, lol!

I would lie in bed and say, “Lord, please forgive me for… “

Then I’d wrack my brains. My teacher would drill it into our head that if you can’t remember your sin, to ask God to reveal it to you. I would fall asleep asking God to convict me of sin I never even committed.

Spiritual Discouragement: The Downward Spiral

As my life went on, I eventually just quit praying, because it was too taxing. It was too frustrating to feel like I had to go through this laundry list of things before I could actually speak to God.

Nobody ever explained that God was not seeing me for my own filthy-rags righteousness. I didn’t realize that once I called on Christ as my Savior, God was seeing me through the eyes of Christ.

It was this whole new world opened up when I understood that I could talk to God. Growing up, I did all the learning, the knowledge, the Awana verses. I went up to the meritorious award. I did it all. I could get the scholarly portion of my relationship with God, but when it comes to a relationship, it wasn’t until the last ten years, that I was like,”Wow.” All because now I know who I am in Christ.

As I counsel women, I see that there are a lot of women in that same position who are struggling to understand their position in Christ. Knowing who you are in Christ would change everything. It did for me. Below are my favorite who I am in Christ verses. See just how life-changing they are.

So where do you start?

Understanding our identity in Christ begins with the Scriptures, of course. God describes our new identity in Christ in the Bible. It isn’t a secret! So who are you in Christ? Check out these verses on who the Bible says you are:

Who I am in Christ Scriptures

Who I am in Christ: NEW

2 Corinthians 5:17, ESV “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.”

TRUTH: You have an entirely new identity. You are brand new in Christ. What defined you before no longer defines you. You are free from your past and free to step into the new person God has created you to be.

Who I am in Christ: EMPOWERED BY CHRIST

Galatians 2:20, ESV “I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.”

TRUTH: You are not left to live the Christian life alone. Not only do you have a new identity, but Christ lives in and through you. It isn’t up to you to live a life of holiness and righteousness on your own.

Who I am in Christ: CHOSEN

1 Peter 2:9-10, ESV “But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.”

TRUTH: You are now royalty, part of a noble family and a daughter of the King. You have a meaningful and specific purpose in life. You are favored by God and that can never be taken from you.

Who I am in Christ: FRUITFUL

John 15:16, ESV “You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you.”

TRUTH: You were chosen by God, hand-picked and deliberately selected. This was not of your own doing but God’s. Furthermore, God is bearing fruit through your life and listens when you pray.

2 Peter 1:3, ESV “His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence.”

TRUTH: You have everything you need to life a life of godliness and purpose. God’s power equips you to live set apart and unto Him.

Who I am in Christ: FORGIVEN

Ephesians 1:7-8 ESV “In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace, which he lavished upon us, in all wisdom and insight.”

TRUTH: You are forgiven of all your sins, washed clean and lavished with grace. God has removed your sin as far as the east is from the west. You are redeemed from both sin and the eternal consequences of sin.

Who I am in Christ: FREE FROM CONDEMNATION

Romans 8:1 ESV “There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death.”

TRUTH: You are no longer condemned by God. Christ has paid the price for your sin so that now and forever, God has removed condemnation from you. You are liberated from the just dues of your sin.

Who I am in Christ: WELCOMED

Hebrews 4:16 ESV “Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.”

TRUTH: God welcomes you to approach him. You can draw near to Him at any time. Your sin no longer separates you from Him. He is available to help you in your time of need.

So who does the Bible say I am? It says you and I are chosen, forgiven, adopted, beloved, redeemed, empowered, called out, royal, welcomed, part of God’s family, having purpose, equipped for every good deed, lavished with love and grace, no longer condemned, filled with the Spirit of God, wise, an heir, seated with Christ, and eternally secure. Amen!

  1. We must know how God sees us. One of the richest passages about identity in the Bible is found in Ephesians 1:3-14. In this passage, Paul addresses the church in Ephesus, explaining the new identity given to a person when they are in Christ.

  2. This is soo good! I think knowing your righteousness in Christ is one of the greatest truths you can ever learn since it is that condemnation, guilt, and shame that so often keeps people from coming to be with Jesus. When we remember that it’s not about what we’ve done but about his perfect son who lives in us, it changes everything. Great job on explaining these truths Arabah.
