Many who link up here are mothers, and we empathize when we read of the struggles that another mom is facing. I found myself feeling the anger and frustration that any mom might, as I read Betsy’s account of what happened to her daughter. Yet, I was struck by how beautifully she led us to let go of bitterness in order to embrace grace.
We don’t always understand situations we go through in our lives, and parenting can force us to answer some tough questions. It can be hard for us, as adults with faith, to understand why things happen as they do sometimes. But it’s so important to remember that we are modeling our faith for our children. We’re showing them how to handle the tough situations that arise in life. We have the privilege of helping them learn to take their hearts, their fears, their emotions – all of it – to the Lord.
Betsy does such a beautiful job explaining her own process of getting through the accident her daughter was in. She also warns us, though, of how easily bitterness can set in to our hearts if we aren’t careful. And honestly, as a parent, that bitterness can set in over something so much smaller than an accident, can’t it? Perhaps our child was overlooked, or maybe a friend was unkind, or perhaps a teacher misunderstood and our child was wrongly singled out. As a mom, the scenarios are endless when we think of hurts that can lead to bitterness.
But Betsy reminds us that, “God can transform our bitter places into fresh opportunities to see His grace.” It’s a choice – we can choose to focus on the negative and risk the seeds of bitterness, or we can focus on the way that God worked, even in our very tough situations, and we can choose grace. I hope you’ll head over to Betsy’s post and read her beautiful thoughts on bitterness or grace.
