Did you know that God has eulogized over you? If you are in Christ Jesus, it’s true! We can walk each day in God’s eulogy because Ephesians 1:3 tells us we have been blessed with every spiritual blessing.
I get that while this sounds great, few of us stop to think about what it actually means. So let me share a bit of my story…
Several years ago, I started the beginning of a very messy, ordinary day. My four littles were at the breakfast table, the baby smearing bananas all over his high chair and the oldest was punching holes in the cereal box with a pen. And me? I was meditating on coffee-stained Scripture cards in a desperate attempt to feed my soul at the start of another life-sucking day.
On one of those cards I’d written out Ephesians 1:3:
“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places”
My mind snagged on that phrase, “blessed us in the heavenly places.” What did that mean? Why the heavenly places and what did it really mean to be “blessed”?
I couldn’t help but need some answers NOW… so I grabbed my study tools and did a quick search on the word blessed. I found it is the word eulogeō in the Greek.
You know… as in our English word “eulogy”, the kind of thing someone does over a loved one at their funeral.
It hit me for the first time that day: God Himself eulogized over me.
Excited by the idea, I began meditating on this passage.
I imagined what might that have looked like? For God, before the beginning of time… the God whose train fills the temple, who is filled from head to toe with blinding glory, to have pinpointed me in his mind and speak blessings over my life?
And what in the world might He have said?
As I continued meditating on this verse, asking the Lord to reveal His truth to me, something incredible happened. Like Alice in Wonderland, a whole new world opened to me.
A little bit of what Paul prayed for just a few verses later in Ephesians 1: 18 began to flood my understanding: “That the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you and the riches of his glorious inheritance towards you.”
I began to understand like never before the HOPE I had in Christ and the surpassing RICHES of my inheritance in Him!
What does it mean to walk in God’s Eulogy?
As I asked the Lord for spiritual wisdom and understanding, He brought Scripture after Scripture to mind of all the things He’s given us in Christ. Blessing after blessing, verse after verse came to mind and my heart almost BURST with joy over each of these as they came flooding my soul!
To take the time to meditate on the truth that God had specifically CHOSEN me as the target of these lavish gifts and had deliberately spoken these blessings over my life was staggering.
Yet my day to day life didn’t always reflect that. In fact, it reflected more of the negativity around me, the doubt within me, and the turmoil about me. And I wanted this to change. I wanted to live more within the blessing and eulogy of God each day. I wanted to draw down what was true in the heavenly places and appropriate it in my day to day life. I wanted my daily life to be impacted by what had been given me in Christ.
I wanted to walk each day in God’s eulogy.
Spiritual Paupers or Princes?
In Christ, we have been given so much. The truth is, no matter what our day, world, bank account, relationships, prognosis looks like, we have been given EVERYTHING we need for life and godliness in Christ Jesus (II Peter 1:3) and have been blessed with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places.
This matters to you because if you’re like me, you don’t want an ordinary life.
You aren’t content with mediocre. You aren’t going to settle for accepting what the news says is true, what the world is selling, or what your human eyes can see. It matters because you have a difference to make- in your family, with your kids, in your church and community, in your nation and world. You are here to fulfill the purposes of God in your generation and see His Kingdom come to earth.
And that means you have to start drawing down on that lavish, abundant spiritual inheritance in your day to day life.
How to Walk in God’s Eulogy
Let me illustrate with a little story. A few days ago, my 17 year old son realized he needed some money for an upcoming outing with friends. I took him up to the bank to make a withdrawal from his account. He has plenty in the bank to take care of his need, he just needed to make a withdrawal.
So, I pulled into the drive through with him and asked for his withdrawal slip… and blank. Nothing. He just stared at me.
He had never filled out a withdrawal slip before and had no idea what to do.
He had to LEARN how to make a withdrawal.
I had to leave the drive-through, pull over, and show him how to fill out the withdrawal slip. And it struck me– this is the way it is with us too. All God’s resources are available to us in the very MOMENT of our need… but it does us no good if it’s an inheritance that sits in the bank.
The life lived in God’s eulogy- the one tuned into spiritual realities, that relies on spiritual resources and the provisions of Christ every moment of the day- is a lifestyle that has to be LEARNED. We have to practice it.
We don’t have to create the resources in the bank, but we do need to appropriate them.
And this takes practice. We have to learn how to draw down on the provisions of God as we go throughout our day. And we’re always learning (no perfection here on earth) and practicing.
And THAT’S why I created Grace Goals.
I knew there was a life of magnificence in the mundane but I needed to know how to draw down on the provisions of God- a vehicle for the gain of magnificence and godliness in my own life.
I needed a tangible way to get my mind around how this worked in practice. I needed a practical way to work it out in real life. I needed a spiritual “withdrawal slip” so to speak. Grace Goals is the biblical framework I discovered in Scripture for actually taking those spoken blessings of God and (very imperfectly!) appropriating them in my day to day life.
This year, for the first time ever, I’m offering a copy of the eulogy I wrote out (talked about above). It’s a compilation of over 60 Scripture blessings to remind you what you’ve been given in Christ… Kinda like a bank statement for you to draw down from each day. It’s powerful!
When you purchase Grace Goals 2021 before October 25, 2020, you’ll receive a copy of this eulogy FREE with your purchase.
I’ll see you there.
