One theme that sticks out in emails I receive is that of prodigal adult children. These are families who raised their kids to know and love the Lord. They seemed to do everything right to build that solid foundation. But, sin can be so enticing. Precious mothers write and say that their heart breaks for their child’s choice. They wonder how they can walk away from the truth that was so deeply rooted in their heart. This week, I was encouraged to read Lori’s post, reminding me that there is hope for the mothers of prodigals, too.
Lori shares six specific reminders for those who are praying for their prodigal. While my own children are still young enough to be living at home, it was so encouraging to read her reminder that there are no perfect parents. I sometimes wonder how I will react if one of my children walks away from the Lord, and I’m sure you’ve thought about that as well. The “what if’s” that I hear from other moms break my heart. God never intended us to be perfect; instead, He created us to need Him. We can’t be perfect, but we can trust the redemptive power of a perfect God. Amen!
Lori writes, “Some of the darkest times of my parenting life have also been some of the sweetest times of my spiritual life.” How encouraging! When I’ve walked through some of the darkest times in my life, I’ve found this to be true. As I lean into the Lord and rely on His mercy and grace, I find that the trials produce a deeper relationship with the Lord. It’s hard to go through them, no doubt. But we have the precious reminder that God’s grace is what gets us through.
