As parents, it’s common for us to pray for our children’s protection and salvation, but that only touches the tip of the iceberg in prayers to pray for your child! Use these powerful Scriptures to pray for your child.
War Room Prayers for Your Child
You want your kids to be okay, to be safe and un-harmed. You want them to love the Lord with all their hearts and follow after God and not fall to the snares of the world.
And you want them to make healthy and wise choices as they grow and mature.
But let’s be real: you also know you can’t make all that happen; there is SO much about parenting beyond our control, especially as our kids get older and start becoming more and more independent.
Like it or not, we can’t protect our kids from every evil or every bad choice.
That’s why prayer is so vital.
In prayer, we ask the omnipotent, omnipresent God to intervene on behalf of our children.
Why Is it Important to Pray for Children?
I Peter 5:8 says the enemy of our souls is on the prowl, ever looking for someone to devour. That means:
- We really do have an enemy and
- We are his targets… me, you, our spouses, and sadly, our innocent children.
Praying for your children is one of the most powerful things you can do as a parent. We should pray daily for our children.
I’m talking about fighting on your knees with your prayers for children.

The Promise of Praying for our children
This week I was reading in Nehemiah and was so encouraged by this passage from Nehemiah 4:14:
“Don’t be afraid of the enemy! Remember the Lord, who is great and glorious, and fight for your brothers, your sons, your daughters, your wives, and your homes!”
We do not need to fear the enemies we encounter in raising our children. God is on our side and as we fight for our children, God fights on our behalf. Praying the Scriptures for your children is the best way to FIGHT!
And while that seems like a no-brainer, so many of us struggle with consistency. Can I get an amen?!
How do you pray scriptures over your child?
I’ve learned having a simple plan to follow helps me tremendously with prayer for my children. Without one, I flounder.
My plan for prayer for my kids involves turning Scriptures into prayer cards that I post around my home and leave in my Bible basket to pray during my time with the Lord. Here’s a sample one from our FREE Scripture Card Pack with war room prayers for your child:
I also have this bookmark with 12 Scriptures to Daily Pray for your Children tucked into my Bible. I use it as a quick reference for praying for my kids.
Now on to 5 of my favorite Scriptures I love to use as a prayer for my children!
5 War Room Prayers for Your Child:
There are SO many wonderful Scriptures to pray for our children but for this post, I’d like to share my all-time top 5 Scriptures I like to pray as prayers for my children.
These prayers for children have given me a spring board for deep prayer and are perfect to take into your war room and do battle with!
Scriptures to pray over Your Children:
Praying For Your Children: John 16:8
“When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment” (NIV)
Prayer Point: Conviction of Sin: We cannot monitor our children 24/7, neither is it our responsibility to play the Holy Spirit in his or her life. But we can entrust them to God and ask His Spirit to convict our children, guard their hearts and keep them from evil.
Praying For Your Children: Galatians 1:10
“Obviously, I’m not trying to win the approval of people, but of God. If pleasing people were my goal, I would not be Christ’s servant.” (NIV)
Prayer Point: Free from the need of other’s approval: Growing up is tough. Peer pressure can be vicious and the desire to be significant doesn’t end when you turn 18. It is vital for our children to make choices based on the Lord’s plan and leading, NOT based on fears, insecurities, misplaced identity, or the desire for other’s favor.
Praying For Your Children: Hebrews 11:6
“It is impossible to please God without faith. Anyone who wants to come to him must believe that God exists and that he rewards those who sincerely seek him.” (NIV)
Prayer Point: Experience God as Rewarder: There are so many pitfalls for a young…or old… one to fall into. Drugs, alcohol, gambling, cutting, excessive gambling, sex, anorexia, and the list goes on. These things promise some sort of fulfillment, some sort of escape. It is important that our children learn to RUN to God as their Rewarder. Only He can satisfy and He promises to do just that!
Praying For Your Children: Joshua 1:8
“Study this Book of Instruction continually. Meditate on it day and night so you will be sure to obey everything written in it. Only then will you prosper and succeed in all you do.” (NIV)
Prayer Point: Love for God’s word: God’s word is a lamp, a shelter, a rock and a sword. It could be compared to the best weapon ever– the kind that morphs into whatever you need at the time! If our children have a love for God’s word, we can be assured of their success.
Praying For Your Children: I Peter 5:6
“Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time.” (NIV)
Prayer Point: Submission to God: A great man or woman, boy or girl is the one who humbles herself before God. True greatness is not found in climbing ladders but in stooping low in the hidden places. That’s a secret I want my children to know.
I hope these Scriptures to pray over your children stir your heart and provide a starting place for bringing your children before the Throne. These are also great scriptures to speak over your child. I’ve found that having a strategy for prayer for my children is essential to actually praying… and is why I love using prayer cards!
