8 best Christmas movies for families

These are a few of our favorite family Christmas movies! Check out our list, and please be sure to share one of your favorites in the comments! We’re always looking for movies to add to our family movie night!

Mandie and the Forgotten Christmas

December, 1900, Miss Heathwood’s School for Girls. Thrust into the chaotic and unfamiliar world of a boarding school at Christmas, Mandie finds herself hounded by new rules and regulations at every turn. While visiting the school’s forbidden attic, Mandie stumbles upon a mystery from which she is warned to flee. Seeking the truth will require Mandie to lie, but it just might proivde they key that unlocks the memories of a long forgotten Christmas…

This is the third installment in the Mandie movies, all of which are great family films.

Little Women

Based on the beloved book by Louisa May Alcott, this movie comes alive with personality and drama. Really a must watch for the whole family. This movie has a wonderful historic component that helps you get a good sense of life in a different time. Grab the popcorn and make time for a family movie night with this family favorite!

The Nativity Story

THE Christmas story. This is another must watch; however, read the reviews for content before watching so you know what to expect. A reminder that the coming of Christ was not sweet and  mild but violent and painful. Christ came anyway and He has overcome! What a tremendous reminder of His goodness to us!

The Christmas Candle

Set at the beginning of the age of electricity, this movie offers a touching reminder of a simpler life. Through the tradition of the Christmas candle, this family movie emphasizes the ability we have to bless and encourage others. The scenery and music are beautiful, and the message of helping others is timely for the Christmas season. If you haven’t seen this movie before, take time this year to enjoy a new Christmas movie together!

The Gift of the Magi

This is such a sweet story of sacrificial giving! However, a series of misunderstandings soon undermine their respective plans for each other. Will their Christmas be ruined, or will it be blessed as they understand just how much they are loved? We love the theme of giving to others, even if it comes at a cost. The reward is wonderful!

The Christmas Choir

The Christmas Choir is based on a true story, and is the inspiring account of how one man can make a remarkable difference simply by giving of himself. Peter, a workaholic, has a chance encounter with a homeless man that changes everything! This meeting challenges Peter to start a choir, and the choir eventually meets with major success. There are so many wonderful moments within this movie to remind our families not to judge others simply because they are different than us. This is a heart-warming story of the most important things!

The Ultimate Gift

A deceased billionaire leaves his spoiled adult grandson a series of odd tasks to perform in order to receive “the ultimate gift,” with the resentful grandson having no idea what that might be. Will he complete the tasks and receive the gift? This family Christmas movie is a great opportunity to talk about what we would do if we were in the grandson’s situation.

It’s a Wonderful Life

My oldest watched this movie for the first time a couple years ago and it is now one of his favorites. This is a timeless story of how a community rallies for one man who falls upon hard times and thinks his life is worthless. This Christmas movie is a great reminder that our investment into each other’s lives really is beneficial! While it is set in a different historic era, there is so much that can be gained from this movie in terms of themes to discuss with our families about intentional living and caring for others! This is a wonderful family movie, and the kids might get a kick out of watching it in black & white!

BONUS!

The Jesus Film

This is a film that many missionaries use to share the gospel. This particular edition is the 35th anniversary edition, with this movie having been translated over 1,100 times for various people groups. The JESUS Film is a faithful depiction of Christ s birth, ministry, death and resurrection as told in the biblical account from the Gospel of Luke.

Isn’t it great that elaborate plans and decorations are unnecessary to make Christmas meaningful and fun? The kids will camp out around the Christmas tree this weekend and pick one of these movies to watch. They love it! What movies are on your holiday list?

  2. I love love love “Little Women”. I also love “White Christmas” and “It’s a Wonderful Life”. My all time favorite, though, is “A Christmas Carol” with George C. Scott as Scrooge. I cry every time I see it as soon as the third ghosst leaves and Scrooge realizes what has happened and he looks out the window and asks that boy what day it is, and how he humbles himself before all the people he offended and asks for their forgiveness. It’s such a wonderful movie.

  3. Christmas In Connecticut starring Barbara Stanwyck, The Bishop’s Wife, Charlie Brown Christmas, Miracle On 34 th Street,The Christmas Carol and the three Mickey Mouse Christmas videos. Wishing you and yours a Blessed Christmas and a Happy,Healthy and peaceful 2019.
