30 Favorite Bible Journaling Verses You Should Try
I have a hypothetical question for you.
If a doctor wrote you a prescription and told you that it was essential for you to take the medicine every day in order to have good health, would you?
I’m guessing yes.
Even if it was expensive.
Even if it tasted terrible.
If he said it was essential, you’d find a way, right?
You’d probably establish a cue to build a new habit (like right after brushing your teeth). You might leave the medicine bottle front and center on the counter where you wouldn’t miss it or set an alarm to remind you when it’s time to take it.
In other words, you’d probably go to great lengths to make sure you followed the doctor’s orders.
So with that in mind, let me ask you a real question …
If the one and only God of the universe gave you a prescription and told you that it was essential for you to “take it” every day, would you?
Proverbs 3:1-2 (ESV): My son, do not forget my teaching, but let your heart keep my commandments, for length of days and years of life and peace they will add to you.
Joshua 1:8 (ESV): [The Lord said to Joshua,] This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.
Do we go to great lengths to follow The Doctor’s orders?
Sometimes I don’t think we totally comprehend just how essential this “medicine” is – and the eternal importance of Who prescribed it.
Matthew 4:4 (ESV): But he [Jesus] answered, “It is written, “‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”
What if we truly took that to heart?
Deuteronomy 11:18-21 (ESV): “You shall therefore lay up these words of mine in your heart and in your soul, and you shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall teach them to your children, talking of them when you are sitting in your house, and when you are walking by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates, that your days and the days of your children may be multiplied in the land that the Lord swore to your fathers to give them, as long as the heavens are above the earth.
The prescription?
The Word of God.
So why wouldn’t we take our medicine every day?
Does it cost too much?
Does it taste bad?
Side note: If you don’t enjoy spending time in the Bible, if it’s not the #1 thing you desire to do each day, then here’s the prescription for that …
Jeremiah 15:16 (ESV): Your words were found, and I ate them, and your words became to me a joy and the delight of my heart, for I am called by your name, O Lord, God of hosts.
In other words, the more you eat it, the more you’ll enjoy it.
I am a living testimony that the prescription works.
The Lord gradually opened my eyes to the importance of His Word (Psalm 119:18) and the more I “ate,” the more I wanted!
In the early days of that wanting, I started writing verses in a journal – long before it was a “thing.” I didn’t sit down and plan to write a verse a day – it sort of evolved. But the Lord knew what He was sparking in my heart and I can’t tell you how thankful I am!
I’m going to say it, even though I know it sounds cliché and you may roll your eyes …
Writing a verse a day – aka verse journaling or verse hunting – literally changed my life.
These days I wouldn’t miss my “medicine” for all the money in the world. And just so you know, I used to skip all the time.
But the transformation didn’t happen overnight.
My habits – and in turn heart – began to slowly change when I started writing a verse a day.

How Can Verse Journaling Help Make Bible study a Daily Habit?
1. It Satisfies the Thrill of the Hunt
Do you like to shop? Hunt for that perfect item? Well, do that in your Bible! As you’re reading a chapter (or 2 or 5) each day, simply hunt for one verse to write down. Ask the Lord which one He wants you to discover. Then enjoy the thrill of finding the perfect Word just for you, just for today.
2. It’s Do-Able
It’s so easy to write one verse! You know what they say – break your ultimate goal down into smaller steps. This little, but powerful goal is Step One in developing your heart for daily time in the Word.
3. It Beckons
Leave your Verse Journal open. It’s funny how motivating it is to have that beckoning empty spot in your Verse Journal staring at you each day. I can’t seem to leave any spot blank! It works!
4. It’s a Habit Log
It has been proven that keeping a habit log helps habits stick. A Verse Journal is basically a log of your new daily habit, but BETTER! Who wants a plain old check mark in a box when you can have daily Bible verses in a keepsake journal!
That’s right. I said Keepsake Verse Journal.
I cherish my verse journals and treasure looking back over each year – in verses.
It truly builds my faith to purposefully remember all that God has shown me through His Word.
My trust in Him grows by leaps and bounds when I go back over the written proof of each Word He gave me right when I needed it each day.
It writes His Word on my heart.
I encourage you to discover the benefits of making your own keepsake verse journal.
May we all go to great lengths to solidify a daily Bible study habit – the essential medicine that God prescribed to change our hearts and lives. You can read more about Verse Journaling here.
