3 Benefits of Biblical Meditation

I’ve faced many intimidating situations in my life but a couple years ago there was one in particular that literally made me shake in my boots.

When I thought about this situation, immediately I felt inferior, out of place, and like a Loser with that capital L.

I wasn’t sure I would actually survive the situation.

Crazy I know, but I bet you know what I’m talking about.

Knowing my propensity to insecurity, I had some prep work to do. Taking Psalm 34:5 as my weapon of choice, I began meditating on this wondrous verse, sharpening my sword, and building a fortress in my soul.

For days, this verse strengthened my heart and prepared my mind to be proactive. The result?

The situation that made me shake with fear turned out to be one of the best experiences of my life.

How to Meditate on God's Word

According to a Huffington Post article entitled, “8 Ways Meditation Can Improve Your Life”, meditation is “mental hygiene” that comes with proven benefits. I find some of the “scientific” results quite interesting:

1. Meditation lowers stress.
2. Meditation improves concentration.
3. Meditation makes you feel happier. I’m just going to give you the exact quote here: “Studies have shown that brain signaling increases in the left side of the prefrontal cortex, which is responsible for positive emotions, while activity decreases in the right side, responsible for negative emotions.” Hm…
4. Meditation makes you physically healthier.

Interesting indeed.

But here’s the thing: We didn’t need the Huffington Post or scientific research to tell us all that. The Bible teaches that when we take the time to meditate on God’s word (Truth!), it changes the trajectory of our lives.

Understood correctly, meditation is a biblical discipline God gave us to nourish our souls, change our thinking, and prosper our steps.

Here are three benefits of biblical meditation:

Discover the 3 amazing benefits to biblical mediation in this post!

1. It will make you prosper (Psalm 1:1-3 and Joshua 1:8)

2. It will make you wise (Psalm 119:97-99)

3. It will enrich your life and heal your body (Proverbs 4:20-22)

Quite simply, we can’t afford NOT to know what the Bible says about meditation and make biblical mediation a regular part of our day!

So let me ask you: How often do you deeply meditate on God’s word?

Do you understand what it is and how to do it?

Years ago, I learned how to meditate on Scripture. I had a five year old and three babies under 2 years of age.

There wasn’t a quiet moment, much less extended time to study the Bible.

For those years I was desperate, oh, so thirsty for a deep drink from God’s word… but I rarely got the chance to just sit with the Scriptures.

During those years God taught me the spiritual discipline of meditation.

Here’s the beautiful thing about it: meditation is 100% portable!

You can meditate anytime, anywhere. At 2am when you’re nursing the baby in the dark. At 10am while wrestling the kids down the produce aisle. At 3pm in the car line or 7pm during baths, you can mediate.

And boy did I ever! I would hungrily find a scripture or even just a phrase to hold onto each morning and then I’d wring every bit of nourishment I could from that sucker throughout the day via meditation.

Like a life-raft in a storm, it sustained me.

It is absolutely NO SURPRISE to me when the Huffington Post says meditation is proven to lower stress, improve brain function, make you happier, and healthier. No surprise at all.

However, “How to Meditate on God’s Word” is one of those things I’ve never, ever, EVER heard taught on.

:(

With something so life-giving, you’d think we’d hear more on exactly HOW to do it… but honestly, I hear far more about the “dangers” of meditation from the Christian community than I do the admonition and instruction for it.

It’s heart-breaking.

{And don’t hate me for this, but it’s sorta like sex: God gave it as a gift. Just because the world mis-uses and perverts it doesn’t mean the gift itself is bad. I’m tired of God’s people handing over God’s gifts to the devil.}

So one of the things I teach in the PROSPER Bible Study Method is exactly HOW to meditate on Scripture. I give FIVE different, amazing ways to meditate on Scripture!

I believe this is so vital, I dedicate an entire training just to this one skill. I promise that if you get nothing else from the study except biblical meditation know-how, the PROSPER Bible Study Method is totally worth it.
