What is War Room Prayer?

Christians often use the term “war room prayer” in reference to spiritual warfare, which is clearly taught in Scripture. War room prayer involves putting on the armor of God (see Ephesians 6:10-11), using spiritual weapons to demolish spiritual strongholds (see 2 Corinthians 10:4-5) and praying for protection against our spiritual enemy (see 1 Peter 5:8-9).

It is vital for us as believers to remember the spiritual warfare going on all around us so we can be fully equipped to stand firm on the truths of God’s Word.

While we do need to be at peace with all men as much as it depends on us (Rom. 12:18), we cannot ignore that an enemy seeks to devour as many as he possibly can.  When we talk in terms of war, we are not talking about people being our enemy. We are referring to the devil and spiritual forces of darkness that seek to deceive, kill, and destroy (John 10:10).

How do you start a Prayer Room?

In Matthew 6:6, Jesus told us that when you pray, “go into your inner room, close your door and pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you.”

Based on this verse, many people use a prayer closet, otherwise known as a war room or a war closet. Having a prayer room in which to pray was the inspiration behind the movie, The War Room, which sparked a fire for many to develop a War Room prayer strategy.

While having a space in your home dedicated to prayer may sound nice, many of us don’t have space for a prayer closet or war room! In this post I’ll share tips for setting up a war room prayer journal or prayer binder, as well as my favorite warfare prayers and Scriptures to help you set up your own prayer War Room. I’ve also included powerful prayer room Scriptures to print and post in your War Room below, so dive in!

These war room prayers will help you develop a prayer strategy to use as you pray for yourself and others.

How to Set up a Prayer Room War Wall

Do you want to deepen your prayer life?  If this is a fight, it makes sense to be intentional about praying powerful war room prayers and having ready a set (think loaded gun!) of war room Bible verses to do battle with.

Without God’s Word, our prayers are too surface level, unspecific, and fleshly minded.

If we want to pray kingdom prayers with Spirit infused strength, we need to be praying War Room Scriptures.

For ourselves, our marriages, and our  kids.

For our nation, our churches, and our communities.

To pray powerful prayers, the only real thing you need to set up your own prayer room war wall is God’s Word!

The good news is that you don’t need an actual wall for your prayer closet. You can just as easily use a war room binder, prayer journal, or even this portable prayer board to tuck behind your couch when you’re done. Easy peasy! Use what you have available and get creative!

What is a War Room Binder?

A war room binder is a place for you to write both Scriptures to pray and your prayers based on those Scriptures. The weapons at our disposal are strong enough to demolish strongholds so a prayer binder is where you take up arms consistently and intentionally. It’s a place for creating a prayer strategy and recording answers to prayers as well.

One of the things I did during my monthly personal spiritual retreat last month was select a few powerful Scriptures to pray regularly. I used these bible verses to start a prayer journal.

The 10 powerful War Room scriptures below are essential for any prayer closet, war binder, or place of prayer … which includes any car, bathroom, kitchen or box… anywhere you want to do battle. :)

Many of these war room scriptures came from Chapter 2 of Fervent: A Woman’s Battle Plan to Serious, Specific, and Strategic Prayer. These were prayers in the war room and taken from the war room movie scriptures.

10 War Room Scriptures to Pray Over Yourself, Your Family, and Your Day

Please note the entries below the references are my own war room prayers. I’ve had many readers ask what version of the Bible the prayers are. They are not a version of the Bible; they are the verse in my own words. I include them here to help others who do not know how to begin praying scripture. I’ve also included the Scripture the prayer is based on as well.

Romans 4:5

“But to the one who does not work, but believes in Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is credited as righteousness (NASB).”

“Lord, I claim no righteousness of my own. I’m spiritually poor, utterly dependent, a beggar. But I cling to this: You justify the ungodly. This is the basis on which I pray and do battle.”

Ephesians 6:12

“For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places (NASB).”

“I acknowledge my struggle is not against flesh and blood. This battle isn’t about the physical issue I’m facing. It is against rulers, against powers, against the world forces of darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. This is where I will do battle Lord, and I will do it in prayer.”

Colossians 2:15

“When He had disarmed the rulers and authorities, He made a public display of them, having triumphed over them through Him (NASB).”

“According to Your Word, Lord, my enemy is disarmed and embarrassed. He is overruled (Eph 1:20-22), mastered (Phil 2:9-11), rendered powerless (Heb 2:14) and his works have been destroyed (I John 3:8). I speak these truths into this stronghold in my life/family/loved one, Lord. I speak TRUTH where lies have prevailed.”

Ephesians 1:21

“far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come NASB)”

“Christ is far above any ruler or authority or power or leader or anything else, not only in this world but also in the world to come. He is the Supreme One, not this stronghold, not the lies this stronghold has been erected on, not the enemy who has waged war against me. Christ is far above and HE will prevail.”

Philippians 2:9-11

For this reason also, God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name,  so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth,  and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father (NASB).”

“At the name of Jesus, every knee will bow, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord. I confess the Lordship of Christ. I renounce all other gods and ungodly deeds. I bow to the headship and authority of Jesus Christ alone.”

Psalm 30:1

I will extol You, O Lord, for You have lifted me up,
And have not let my enemies rejoice over me.” (NASB)

“I will exalt you, Lord, for you rescued me. You refused to let my enemies triumph over me. You are not willing to give me up to my spiritual enemies, Lord. You aren’t willing to let me go. You will fight for me and complete the victory in me.”

Psalm 138:7

Though I walk in the midst of trouble, You will revive me;
You will stretch forth Your hand against the wrath of my enemies,
And Your right hand will save me.” (NASB)

“Though I walk in the midst of trouble, You will revive me. You will stretch forth Your hand against the wrath of my enemies, and Your right hand will save me.” I trust in Your great love to uphold me, Lord. My battle is not over. I walk through treacherous ground yet I will trust You to save and deliver me. You will fight for me.”

Matthew 6:13

“And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.” (NASB)

“Lead me not into temptation, Lord. Deliver me from evil for Yours is the kingdom and authority and glory and I desire to live for Your kingdom, not the enemy’s.

II Thessalonians 3:3

“But the Lord is faithful, and He will strengthen and protect you from the evil one.” (NASB)

“You are faithful, Lord, to strengthen me against any attack and to protect me from the evil one. I trust in Your faithfulness as I face this day.”

Jude 24-25

Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling, and to make you stand in the presence of His glory blameless with great joy, 25 to the only God our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion and authority, before all time and now and forever. Amen.” (NASB)

“Lord, You are able to keep me from stumbling. You will present me blameless in Your presence. It is upon this hope I cast myself and acknowledge Your authority, power, and majesty. To You be all the glory and honor. It is for these things- for Your glory and honor- that I ask Your mighty hand to bring about victory in my life. Amen and amen!”

  1. Love this post! Just in time to start up my New Year wardroom. :-) Thank you for all your lessons and encouragement that you share in order for us to grow closer to the Lord and magnify Him, and not us. May He, who is the One who holds all things together, be glorified through it all!

      1. I just stumbled upon your writing… I just have to tell you, I stared at your name for a minute in confusion. I thought I was reading my own name but somehow the letters were rearranged ~ my name is Ahbra Joy :)

  2. I seriously just saw this movie and these verses are good. I loving the psalm 138:8 verse. It would be cool to personalized them for certain family members. Thanks!

  3. Sitting here LITERALLY with chills! My church had a family prayer night last night and my Pastor would pray over us all intermittently as the congregation took up praying the remainder of the time. As he was praying I thought to myself “I want to pray like that! I want to know those specific words to use!” Then when I woke up this morning, I began praying to God that He would make me more intentional and specific in my prayer. And I admit that I don’t know how to be as specific or intentional as I would like to be~ I depend completely on Him and His Holy Spirit to make my words intentional. I, too, have been getting weary of my fleshly, surface prayers. Then I log on and see this! Wow! He moves among His children! What a blessing these scriptures are to me! They’ve been printed and hung in my War Room, and I absolutely will be praying the words ~ specifically and intentionally. Make us a House of Prayer, Lord! Thanks so much!

  6. Hi, my name is Inita I was a parent to 4 now I have 3 and I stumbled across this website after watching the movie war room and i am in so much pain and agony right now and I didn’t know where to start and being that I’ve always believed in god and I know in my heart that his grace and mercy is the only thing that can get me through I decided to reach out on this website I don’t often pray like I know I should I don’t go to church and I don’t or haven’t established a relationship with god and I want to know him desperately I just don’t know where to begin I’m so lost and I don’t know how to find my way I’m trying to fight unwinning battles as well as fighting one with myself I’m weak I don’t have any strength left in me I need spiritual guidance and I can’t do this alone I’ve tried my way and it never works please help me!!

    1. Inita, Romans 10:13 says, “Whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.” You don’t need to be a good person or do certain things to know God- just call on Him in the midst of your need. There are three simple things we each must know in order to be right with God and begin a relationship with Him. First, that you are a sinner. Your sin, whatever it may be, has separated you from God. Second, that God made a way for your sin to be forgiven, and that is through His son, Jesus Christ. And third, you must believe in Christ and accept His Lordship (Him as boss) over your life. Submit your will to Him and invite Him to be your Lord and Savior through prayer. I would love to discuss more with you if you’d like. you can contact me via the email on my contact page. Praying for you…AJ

    2. Inita, you are not alone with your struggles. Prayer is powerful and effective. To have a relationship with God is to have peace and joy. You are surrounded by many individuals who would love to reach out to you and help you build a personal relationship with God for you and your children. Check out my church website to gain support.

    3. Hi Inita, I was like you at one time. I had three children and had just accepted the Lord and not even a year later my 4month old baby girl passed away. I was in an abusive marriage. I went to the chapel to pray that the lord save my babies life but instead this small voice told me to pray the lord’s will to be done. Now at that time I didn’t know anything about letting the lord take over. It had to have been the spirit praying for me. A little more than a year later I gave birth to a baby boy. It took awhile but God gave me such a peace over my baby girl. The lord also rescued me from my marraige of 26 years. The lord has blessed me over the years. Blessings I don’t deserve but because of his grace I receive them. I am telling you this because I feel your pain and am sorry for your loss. I go to church now but I don’t pray or study God’s word like I should but I am trying to change that through the lord’s help. I know that he loves me just the way I am but desires to have a closer relationship with him. Just remember that there is nothing that the lord CAN’T do. D.C

I’ll be praying for you, for your family and you’re ministry!
To Him be all the glory!! ?✨?✨??✨?✨?✨?

  25. Hi, I have recently watch the movie and I so touched by it. I admit that my life is a disaster, I realize I really need God but I just don’t know how to ask. I’ve got so many problems, I miss God so much. I’ve been trying to use LoA too. If there’s one thing that I would like to fix in my life that would be my love life and relationship, my love life is a misery and it’s killing me slowly. Just like the main character of the movie said “I don’t really need more money, I only need love” I always lose the war in this area no matter what I do and how much I sacrifice for it, I need Jesus to help me. Could you be so kind to teach me how? I desperately need it.

    1. If you would like to accept Jesus as your LORD and Savior, just say this and mean it with all your heart,”Dear Jesus, I believe that You died on the cross for our sins, and rose from the dead 3 days later. Please forgive me for all my sins, and come into my heart and change my life. LORD, I want to take You more serious. In Jesus name I Pray Amen. Also, talk with God everyday, and lots of times throughout the day, thank God,Praise God,believe God and talk to Him about your feelings and God hears it,talk to Him like He’s your Best Friend, just also remember that He is God also. God bless you. My email is [email protected] if you need to talk. God bless you ?

  26. This is amazing! Thank you so much for writing it I just loves how one verse so perfectly connects to and transitions into the next, these are truly powerful reminders and the fact that you turned them into practical prayers is really helpful. I do believe the 1st Thessalonians 3:3 is actually from 2nd Thessalonians 3:3 :)

  27. May God bless you for service and faithfulness in Him.stay bless and continue with the Good work for His glory

  28. I would like prayer for my family. Transitioning temporarily into another country for his job. We are both believers and he will go first. I am needing lots of prayers my way. Thank you for what you do and may the Lord richly bless you!!

God bless you.

  30. Thanks for these powerful verses. I “think”, most times in my daily life that I’m to busy to read the bible. I’ve always Loved God. In my families old tradition, we have always had a bible laying on our night stand table by the bed. Everyday I awake; I glance at it & think… I really need to read this book, but how long has it been really? I can’t even count. It could’ve been days, weeks, or years. I don’t now how or why I’ve fallen off but I have. I pray everyday, but of course thats not enough.

  31. Thanks for sharing. I will start using the verses above to pray for myself and my family. My home is on fire right now and I’m at a crossed road trying to figure out if I should move on without looking back or stay in the whole mess. There is infidelity with various women, drunkenness, and roaming the streets at night. I had to leave my job and my comfort zone to be with my husband in a different country when I saw that my husband had changed ( He used to be a prayer warrior). I am weak in praying now because I feel nothing is changing. My home needs a miracle and the healing of God!

  32. Hi,
I watched War Room last night and I am in need of prayer. My husband is addicted to porn. We were married only three years ago and I had no idea what had been going on in his private life until we were married and under one roof. I was out shooting a photo session after church one Sunday, but I senced I needed to go home. When I walked in the door, my husband was shocked to see me. And there it was porn on the screen , little girls, teens and women. This happened within the first year of our marriage. I got rid of his computer, and placed software on his phone after finding porn on his phone twice. I have become so codependent that I am Ill from it. My friends say I am not the person bi used to be. I am so angry , and though he is getting help, there still
Is no trust! An iron has gripped my soul! I despise him for what he has done to me . I need help, I feel like I am heading for a breakdown. My husband has a computer at work and Lord only knows what he has stored on there. Please pray for me.

  33. This caught my attention. It’s refreshing to find others who understand the importance of Scripture, and prayer, in the battle against the enemy, sin, and evil in this world. Thank you for the inspiration.

  34. I just started these prayers, and I love them already! I want so very much to deepen my prayer life. I feel like I’m on good track covering my family with prayers each morning, but I often leave myself a little less covered! Looking forward to the next 9 prayers! :)

  35. As someone who wakes up some days having to battle old inner foes, Psalm 30:1 has become more than a prayer, it has become a daily affirmation.
