This weekend I’m attending a mini-retreat with some fellow female workers. The theme of our time is “Hearing From God.”
Does that sound blissful or what?!
I was asked to be on the panel to share about hearing from God through His word and I thought to give a summary of the tips I’ll be sharing:
- Do what you need to do so that your time with the Lord isn’t rushed. For me, this means going to bed early enough so I can get up before my kids. Reality Check: Doesn’t always happen!!
- There are two different approaches to time in God’s word and it is helpful to know the distinction. There’s a difference between reading the Bible to commune with God (to connect with Him and allow His Spirit to fill your cup and nourish your spirit) and Bible study.
You need time doing the first one every day. The second one can be done several times a week (sometimes more, sometimes less) as you have more lengthy periods to devote to scripture study.
But don’t confuse the two! The first type involves simply being with the Lord and relating with Him through prayer, Scripture, worship, meditation, journaling, etc. The second is more for instruction, correction, reproof, theology, doctrine, and the like.
For Bible study, I recommend: Rick Warren’s Bible Study Methods. In this book, he gives you 12 different methods you can use for studying God’s word, from doing a topical study, book study, character trait study, and many more. He includes forms you can use for each method. Very useful!
- Praying God’s word is a spiritual discipline everyone should do. A new thing I started this year is praying the promises I find in God’s word. This has become such a rich and meaningful practice for me that I’ve created a workshop and accompanying prayer journal you can grab FREE here.
I also highly recommend this post by F Dean Hackett in which he shares 3 Ways to Stay Spiritually Nourished. Dean writes,
“Have you ever walked up to a water fountain or a soda machine dying of thirst only to find it did not work?
This can make you feel disappointed, frustrated, or even angry.
These emotions are what a spiritually thirsty child of God experiences when he or she walks away from an encounter with a spiritual leader who has not properly cared for their personal spiritual nurture. They may never express their feelings, but they are there in their spirit. “I was so longing for a drink from the Living Water but all I received was dusty Christian cliques.”
Isn’t that so true? Dean goes on to share how we can be nourished and ready to give Living Water to others.
Thanks for this helpful post Dean. We appreciate your wisdom and the way you serve the body of Christ via your blog. I’ve been blessed at your place many times.
