How to Raise Spiritually Minded Children

Raising spiritually minded children has to do with us setting our hearts and minds on things of God. Because our children are watching us, we need to have our hearts focused on God. Keep reading for 10 ways to raise spiritually minded children.

When my firstborn was very young, we would take him up and down the streets with us as we went out to share Christ.

We would often enter store fronts and shops with idols displayed and incense burning. As we would open up spiritual conversations with strangers, Lee, our son, learned to do the same.

One day, when he was about four years old, we invited a local friend over so our boys could play together. As the boys were in the back playing, I overheard Lee strike up a conversation. It went like this (this was all in the local language, which made it even more precious):

“Do you believe in God?”

“Huh?”

“You know, God! The Most High God!”

“No.”

“Well do you believe in angles, those things that fly?”

“Yeah, I guess.”

“God made those angels. God really does exist! He made everything, the trees, the plants, the sky, the angels, even you.”

Well the little boy had never been told that in his life and he undoubtedly thought my son was one nutty cracker, but it made me so happy!

It also taught me that our children learn from us, for good and bad.

We raise spiritually minded children when WE are spiritually minded.

Our children are watching us and learn from us -- the good and the bad. We raise spiritually minded children when WE are spiritually minded. It all comes down to setting our hearts, minds, and mouths on the things of God. Read more for 10 ways to raise spiritually minded kids.

We’ve spent many weeks here together talking about specific, practical things we can do to be spiritually minded but really, it all comes down to setting our hearts, minds, and mouths on the things of God. This takes the help of His Spirit. He is always working in us to just keep bringing us back to God and His Word, and letting Truth shape our perspective, priorities, and activities.

The Word of God is food and when we take it in, the Holy Spirit applies it to our hearts and lives. One of His roles is to bring to our remembrance, bring to our minds, the Word of God, thus making us spiritually minded. Romans 8:6 says, “The mind set on the flesh is death, but the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace.”

How are you doing at listening to the Spirit? Do you hear Him as He brings God’s word to your mind? Do you stop right away and ponder what He says? Do you have a Bible reading plan? Are you regularly giving God’s Word voice in your mind?

If you don’t have a reading plan, I encourage you to try one of these simple ways:

The One Year Chronological Bible NIV  (about 15 minutes of reading a day will take you through the entire Bible in one year and you can start TODAY! No need to wait for January~)

  1. This is a wonderful (and I can not emphasize that enough) series! You have written from my heart. This is where our primary focus should be in parenting: raising children who will lead lives submitted to carrying out the will of God, so that they can be used for His glory – and by doing so will experience all the peace and joy that God desires for them to have. Thank you for sharing!

  2. Love this! Indeed, the key to raising spiritually minded kids is for parents to be spiritually minded. Our children catch what do, far more than what we say.

  3. Thank you for speaking truth into people’s lives and offering very helpful advice! I was struggling with not being able to share the gospel with people. I asked God, why don’t you send people to me that I can speak to or show me someone that needs you? I don’t understand why I’m not being used to evangelize! Then God spoke to my heart and told me, “Amber, every day you are a missionary and your mission field is your son.” It made m realize how important it is to God for me to evangelize in my home with my actions, words and ATTITUDE! I have a young believer who is watching and learning from me, am I setting a good example? Am I doing like St. Francis who said, ” never stop preaching, and if necessary use words.”?
Thank you again for sharing the wisdom God has given you!

  4. This is awesome to finally find a God fearing blogger and with such great examples. lovely
