If you mention the Duggars right about now, it’s likely you’re gonna get some strong emotions thrown your way.
Anger. Cynicism. Excuses. Calls for grace. Undying support.
We can’t all agree on what to think of the Duggars. But we have more in common than we realize.
Underneath those easy surface emotions… and our numerous opinions… is something much more serious that needs to be addressed: grief.
Grief that our heroes aren’t what we made them out to be.
Grief that we are divided as a community. Grief that the name of Christ is being reproached in discussions across the web.
Grief at hatred and ignorance and lack of discretion and idolatry and disunity.
Grief that we’ve been used and sold to on one hand and bashed and ridiculed on the other. Grief that children suffer and nothing is ever as simple as we’d like.
At the end of the day, after we’ve stated our piece and shared our opinion, what we all take to bed at night is a hurting heart.
In that, we’re alike.
And I believe we need the word of God to be balm to our hearts. Truth to our minds. A rock for our feet.
Because sometimes? Sometimes this world spins crazy and knocks us flat. Our feet can fly out from under us and our heart can be distressed within us and in those times we have to be Davids. Warriors who know where to go:
“In addition to all this, David was greatly distressed in heart because the people spoke of stoning him, for all the people were embittered…
But David strengthened himself in the Lord his God.”
I Samuel 30:6
It’s easy to be full of hope and courage when we have heroes to look up to, a support team around us, a win on the horizon. But when all these are stripped away, there’s only one place to go for strength: The Lord our God.
And He’s enough.
The Lord is the one who abides forever.
He has established His throne for judgment and will judge the world in righteousness.
The Lord will also be a stronghold for the oppressed,
A stronghold in times of trouble.
Those who know Your name will put their trust in You,
For You, O Lord, have not forsaken those who seek You.
The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer,
My God is my rock, in whom I take refuge.
He is my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.
The Lord sustains all who fall and raises up all who are bowed down.
The eyes of all look to You, and You give them their food in due time.
The Lord is righteous in all His ways and kind in all His deeds.
~~~Psalm 18, 50, 145
We find our strength by remembering the nature and nearness of our God.
What do we need to know about the Duggars? That this isn’t primarily about them at all and the real Hope we have stands forever.
Listen brothers and sisters, we need to understand the first and most important battle field is always, always, always that for our heart.
Our hearts can easily be disheartened, discouraged, and distrustful. A warrior knows this.
A warrior knows battles are always won in the heart first before they can be won anywhere else; and if you lose the heart battle, you’ve lost the war. A real warrior knows it’s essential to “let all that I am wait quietly before God, for my hope is in Him.” Psalm 62:5
It’s the only way to win the battle.
Because people will let us down…
…but our hope isn’t in a presidential candidate or a TV show family or a bank account or a job offer or a medical breakthrough or a support team the size of Texas. Our hope is in the Name of the Lord who promises to be near… to be IN… to be Living Water for us.
When in distress, the quiet Presence of God is where we need to be.
Not on our phones or on FaceBook or the comment section of the tabloids.
So let’s do this today, ok? Let’s set aside every other place we could be and let all that we are wait quietly before our God.
Only then will we be ready to take on the world at our doorstep.
A challenge for all of us today:
Take time to wait quietly before God with “all that you are.”
Put aside all distractions. Focus on His character, perhaps with this set of Attribute cards? Just allow truth about who HE is to strengthen your heart.
Today, be a David. Be strong in the Lord.
Win the battle that matters the most.
