Names of Jesus Advent Ornaments

Are you struggling to find simple ways to make the Christmas season meaningful?

There are so many great ideas out there, it is easy to get overwhelmed! I often struggle with knowing what to include in our holiday celebrations.

Before my oldest son was even born, I knew I wanted Christmas to be a special time of focusing on Christ. I wanted to find something to help us keep our eyes on Jesus throughout the holiday season, but would also be easy to do that the whole family could join in on. Are you looking for something like this too?

Today, I’d love to share with you our family’s earliest and favorite Christmas tradition. We love our Names of Jesus Christmas Ornaments.

Names of Jesus Christmas Ornaments: Our first and favorite Christmas tradition

The concept is simple. Twenty-five ornaments, each with a name of Jesus and a verse reference written on them. Each evening you pick one (or two or three if you’re behind!) ornament, read the verse, and place it on the tree. It’s as easy as that.

If you want to go further, you can discuss the passage, pray, or sing a carol. However, you don’t need to feel pressure to make it anymore than it is. It is beautiful in its simplicity.

We have done this Advent tradition since my oldest’s first Christmas, just before he turned one year old. Although he didn’t understand the words we read, he loved picking the ornament and carefully placing it on the tree. He would smile, clap, and dance while we cheered him on.

The following Christmases he’s enjoyed the tradition just as much, gaining more understanding every year. This year will be his fourth time hanging the ornaments on the tree and I cannot wait to see his comprehension of our great Savior grow even more. I also look forward to beginning the process with our second born. Though he is only six months old, I know he will love it just as his brother did.

I first came across the idea at “I am momma” and although I thought the way they did their ornaments was neat, I knew I wanted something that would be durable enough to last through many years of toddler abuse.

I found a tutorial like this one for printing onto fabric, printed the names and verses onto fabric, and sewed together very simple cloth ornaments. They are perfect for little fingers!

If you are interested in trying out this Christmas tradition, you definitely don’t have to make your ornaments the same as ours. Making them in a style that works for your family is part of the fun! Any type of ornament that you can write the name and verse on will work great!

The names of Jesus

Once you’ve determined what style ornament you want, you need to decide what names you want on them.

These names are so amazing. They speak volumes as to Jesus’ character and power. There are also so many to choose from! I spent a long time pouring over this list until I narrowed down the ones that would be on our advent ornaments. It was such a great experience to meditate on these names as I chose them.

Here are the ones I picked:

Lion of Judah (Rev 5:5)
Alpha and Omega (Rev 1:8)
Light of the World (John 8:12)
Living Water (John 4:10)
Messiah (John 4:25-26)

The Vine (John 15:5)
Lamb of God (John 1:29)

Gift of God (John 3:16)
