If you struggle with your identity in Christ, try these 6 prayers to protect your identity and to remind you of who He says you are. Hold to His truth to defeat the enemy's lies.

I forget who I am a lot… at least, who I am according to God. When different situations arise throughout the day, Satan hands me lies which I quickly accept.

I struggle through a project and think, “I am not smart enough.”

My hard work goes unrecognized and an internal voice whispers, “You are nothing special” and “No one cares about you.”

Losing my patience with my toddler brings on, “You are a bad mother.” And messing up a batch of cookies and leads to “See, you can’t do anything right.”

Even when something good happens, the lies sneak in, “You don’t deserve recognition,” or “It was just a fluke, don’t expect success again.”

Wearing each lie like an article of clothing, the words “failure, mess up, and mistake”, stamp themselves across every aspect of my life.

Yet, even as I believe them, I know these lies are attacks from the enemy; all part of a battle over my identity.

Priscilla Shirer describes this situation perfectly: “The enemy wants you to suffer from a case of mistaken identity. Makes his job a whole lot easier. And makes your defenses a lot weaker. He’s working overtime to keep you identity masked, to keep the truth from coming out—that you are indeed alive and free and empowered by God’s own Spirit to fight victoriously against him.”

(From Fervent: A Woman’s Battle Plan to Serious, Specific, and Strategic Prayer).

I hear the enemy’s lies over and over again, but fail to protect and arm myself with God’s truth. My defenses are weak.

Fortunately, a simple solution for weak defenses exists; strengthen them. Plant scripture in your heart and mind so truth overcomes the lies.

While the solution is simple, it requires hard work. We must retrain our brains to block Satan’s lies and believe in God’s truth. Successfully building our defenses requires consistent and intentional prayer over our identity.

6 Prayers for your Identity

These 6 prayers to protect your identity will help you stay focused on the One to whom you belong. Use these to overcome the lies the enemy would have you believe.

1. God I am your workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which you prepared for me. When I struggle, help me find confidence in this truth. For I trust in the one who equips me with everything good for doing your will (Ephesians 2:10, Hebrews 13:21).

2. God you called me out of darkness into your marvelous light. You chose me, inviting me into a royal priesthood, a holy nation, and people for your own possession. I dismiss any feelings of insignificance because I know you call me worthy. (1 Peter 2:9).

3. Oh Heavenly Father, what love you have for me that I may be called your child! When the world does not think I am anything special, I rest assured that you know me; you count every hair on my head! You see me as precious and valuable. Thank you for your loving care. Please help me see myself the way you do. (1 John 3:1-2, Luke 12:6-7, Isaiah 43:4).

Do you struggle with remembering who God created you to be? Use these prayers to protect your identity.

4. Jesus I am grateful for being a branch on your vine. I acknowledge my inability to accomplish anything without you, but you promise if I abide in you and you in me that I will bear much fruit. Help me to remain rooted in you today; for with you, nothing is impossible. (John 15:5, Philippians 4:13).

5. Wonderful, my Creator, I am the work of your hands, fearfully and wonderfully made. You are the potter who formed me, and the knitter who stitched me together. Everything you make is good, including me. Help me stand firm in this truth today. (Isaiah 64:8, Psalm 139:14, Genesis 1:31).

6. Abba Father, thank you for adopting me into your family and making me a fellow heir with Christ Jesus. Today I build the defenses around my identity by declaring your truth. I am equipped through Christ with every spiritual blessing, chosen by you before the foundation of the world, regarded as holy and blameless before you, redeemed and forgiven, lavished with grace, a recipient of a glorious inheritance in heaven, and secured forever by the Holy Spirit of promise. Let these truths rule in my heart and my life. Amen. (Ephesians 3:1-10, Romans 8:14-15).

As you pray over your identity, remember Priscilla Shirer’s words, “You are indeed alive and free and empowered by God’s own Spirit to fight victoriously against him [Satan].”

So hold fast to your identity, build your defenses, and claim victory.
